Robert Nix’s Once in a Blue Moon

By Stephen Chow
Robert Nix marches to his own beat, I’ll give him that. He’s a one-man rock opera. And on Once in a Blue Moon, he appears to be having an open conversation with himself, with a little help from his inner Michael McKean in character as David St. Hubbins. Although St. Hubbins would never be motivated to use “exponentially” in a lyric. If you’re missing Jethro Tull or The Psychedelic Furs or drugs, Robert Nix is an easy fix. Once in a Blue Moon is also a great record if you’re having a bit of a joust, either mentally, emotionally, or literally. You’ll know what I mean when you listen to it.

Nix’s way of harmonizing with himself is fascinating. That open conversation I mentioned. He’s handing it off and then picking it up. We’re just walking in on him, huddled in the corner of his home studio, in between Skype conversations with Dr. Frank N. Furter.

I’m absolutely obsessed with “Dad’s Song.” It’s a theme song to a sci-fi sit-com set in space starring Archie Bunker’s ghost. It’s just so bizarre, and lovely, and fucking weird. And I think that the next time Joss Whedon makes a musical episode of a TV show, he should ring up Nix.

Another good one. Real Time Drum Solo,” mostly because of the reverb. And again, odd, and very much something Robert Nix would do. I feel the same way about “Can’t Get to Sleep.” In fact, when something is inexplicable but pleasant, I’m going to call that a Nix.

If you want to get a sense of Nix, the opening track, “Won’t Got with the Flow,” is a great introduction, but if you hang out, it only gets stranger. And I still don’t know if I liked this album or not. I know I’ve listened to it several times now, and I just keep listening to it. Did Nix embed audiophonic LSD in the record. I feel like he would, if he could.

Must listens:

“Won’t Go with the Flow”
“Dad’s Song”
“Real Time Drum Solo”
“Can’t Get to Sleep”
“Once in a Blue Moon”

Wow. You gotta watch this. “Won’t Go with the Flow”
He certainly does not. Totally a Nix.
