Gary is a new friend. He owns the building that my friends live in in San Pedro. Often times, when I go to see them, Gary is at their place. Melanie usually makes a wonderful meal – her specialty is chicken cutlets – and Gary makes this awesome salad that I will call Holy Amazeballs This is So Freaking Delicious Salad or HATISFDS.
I don’t know why this salad makes me shovel it in my face so fast. Maybe it because it’s full of just the right flavors. It’s tangy but it’s also got the egg. There’s the crunch of the celery and the delicious coating of lemon, lime and mayo.
It’s ingredients are proportional. That’s the thing about me. I have this freakishly weird issue with disproportionate salads. Like little bits of things and then big chunky things. Yeah, total weirdo. I like the ingredients to be within a certain range of the same size. I’m like the unfamous Billy Bob Thornton or just Billy Bob Thornton now.
Every time I go to Mel and Dom’s house or every time Gary comes to my house, he has to bring the Holy Amazeballs This is So Freaking Salad. And he does so, dutifully.
Why don’t I make it myself? I will. But the magic is in Gary’s kitchen. I don’t know that I want to spoil it for myself. I used to have heroes. I would look up to this singer or that actor. I don’t have that anymore. After working in and around the entertainment industry, I don’t look up to anyone, except Dave Grohl. And this salad. I look up to this salad.
This salad is a little bit Greek and its own creation. You could throw in olives and cucumbers but then you’d alter the taste of this particular blend. That’s the crazy thing about salads. One thing sends it off into a whole new flavor direction.
Anyway, it’s fraking delicious and here’s the ingredients of HATISFDS:
- Lettuce – iceberg is best in this one
- Red bell pepper
- Garbanzo beans
- Boiled egg
- Dressing – lime, lemon, mayo
The Big Push
I’m trying to eat better and steadily working toward a goal to drop some pounds and some bad habits. I’m not a cold turkey type of person so I ramp toward a goal. I’m walking every day and trying to cut down my vices little by little.
Jumping in at a certain age and this out of shape would do me no good. I might even injure myself. So I’m doing it in the tried and true way that has worked in the past. I’ve been known to ramp to a healthy zone and stay there for years.
Since I’m not a big food preparer, I’m always looking for things that are easy to make but good for me. I gravitate toward vegetables anyway and if I set my mind to it, I could probably forego meat altogether. My veggie head friends say it’s the best thing to do.
The HATISFDS has the protein, veggies and umph that I’m looking for. Try it for yourself and let me know what you think.
And let me know about your salad recipes. Everyone has their own masterpiece.
