Amy Winehouse, Adele, Annie Lennox, and Grace Slick had a baby. Nastasia Avrutin. Arresting, haunting, and bold as hell, Avrutin’s solo project Digit + Stas and her new EP Violet is a whirling cyclone spinning off into myriad dust devils of emotions and conjurings.
Avrutin has lived all over – St. Petersburg, Jerusalem, Toronto, currently Brooklyn – and has added pieces of her journey to her music. That’s probably why Violet is richly and indefinable. It’s also full of raw power.
The EP has an ethereal quality. Avrutin’s voice is eerie and commanding, soulful and a melodic wail at times. Definitely worth putting in your rainy day collection or for more contemplative moments. But by no means is this a heavy record. Violet is a mantra. A prayer.
