When artists such as Billy Crain take some time out from playing with and opening for other acts to do their own projects, it’s always a treat. Crain’s Family Matters is a wildly entertaining inner journal and road bible.
Crain writes and performs from the heart. He cuts right to the core of life, his messages direct. Every track on Family Matters reveals a complete story. You’re compelled to listen, waiting to hear what happens next.
The track “Lucky Penny” addresses school shootings and manages to be heartbreaking and soothing without being preachy or sappy. Most tracks are autobiographical such as the title track “Family Matters.” Crain rolls right up to grief, remorse, regret, gratitude, and joy with a refreshing fierceness.
Crain has been a part of rock legends stories for decades, having toured with The Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, The Dixie Chicks, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Charlie Daniels Band, ZZ Top, The Cars, Merle Haggard, Van Halen, and many more.
He’s a decidedly upbeat and enthusiastic after all of those years out on the road. That’s a trick in and of itself, but Crain is not about tricks. Crain’s a sincere, genuine, and gracious person. Family Matters is proof of that.
